Bongani Cigars
Our Story

A Legacy Rolled by Hand

“Bongani” means “be grateful” in Zulu.

It is the philosophy stitched into every box we pack and every leaf we roll — gratitude for the soil that grows our tobacco, for the hands that shape it, and for a heritage that had never before been given a seat at the world’s luxury table.

2013 — 2016

A Founder’s Ambition

Bongani began in 2013 as a conviction: that Africa, home to some of the richest soil on earth, deserved its own seat among the world’s storied cigar houses. Three years of sourcing, testing and training followed before the brand launched in 2016 — the first African-made luxury cigar to reach the global market.

Trained by the Masters

Every Bongani cigar is hand-rolled in Maputo by a team trained directly by master rollers from the Dominican Republic — torcedores whose craft spans generations. Our first graduating class of Mozambican rollers completed their training in 2017, carrying decades of technique into a wholly new tradition.

Sourcing

From African Soil to the Final Wrap

Three continents, one blend — chosen for balance rather than convenience.

Filler

Grown in Mozambique’s Manica province and in Nigeria, then blended with Dominican tobacco to perfect combustion and burn.

Binder

Dominican leaf, chosen for its elasticity and even burn — the structural backbone of every roll.

Wrapper

A premium Cameroon leaf, prized for its subtle spice and fine, toothy texture — the final signature of a Bongani cigar.
