About Bongani

American Hearts, African Pride

Ron Donaldson and Rob Hunter have been business partners for thirty years, built across construction, food service, restaurant operations, and franchising. Bongani Cigars USA is what they decided to bring to market after decades of working together and more than thirty-five years of combined experience in cigar retail and lounge operations on Beale Street.

The partnership behind the brand

Thirty years of business partnership isn’t a line written for a website. It’s what happens when two people build restaurants, manage franchises, and run construction operations long enough to know how the other one thinks. Ron and Rob worked together across industries before cigars, and that foundation is what gave them the confidence to step into a market where most new brands vanish after their first year.

Rob operates four lounge locations along Beale Street, the most visited attraction in Tennessee, and founded the Beale Street Cigar Festival, an annual event that draws thousands of attendees over Labor Day weekend. He’s spent sixteen years building relationships with respected names across the premium cigar industry. That’s long enough to know what legitimacy looks like in this business and what it costs to earn.

Ron brings something different to the table, and the partnership needed it. As President and CEO of a multifamily construction firm, he’s spent his career managing budgets, crews, and timelines across dozens of active projects at once, the kind of operational discipline that has nothing to do with cigars and everything to do with running a company that keeps its promises. Rob knows the cigar industry from the inside. Ron knows how to build the structure underneath a growing business so it doesn’t buckle under its own momentum. That combination, not either one alone, is what gave them the confidence to take Bongani from an idea to a company.

The founder and the American expression

Bongani was originally founded by Kamal Moukheiber, who saw a place for African-grown tobacco in a market that had never met it. Ron and Rob brought the operational experience, the lounge network, and the retail credibility to carry that idea from concept to humidor. Bongani Cigars USA is the American expression of that vision, built on a partnership strong enough to hold up over the long run.

Relationships with recognized names in premium cigars

That’s not a startup scrambling for attention. It’s infrastructure, the kind that lets a new brand prove itself in front of real smokers without hype or countdown timers.

This is a brand built by people who’ve watched other brands arrive loud and vanish quiet. They know what earns a spot in the humidor and what gets returned. They waited until they had something you couldn’t find anywhere else. You can see what that means in practice on the products page.

What comes next

Bongani isn’t chasing a moment. Ron and Rob aren’t trying to rush a reputation that takes decades to build the right way. The goal is straightforward: in ten years, when people talk about the cigars that changed what they thought was possible, Bongani is one of the names they remember.

This cigar isn’t for the smoker who already has three humidors and a subscription to every legacy brand. It’s for anyone curious enough to ask what an African-grown cigar tastes like, whether it’s their first time in a lounge or their thousandth. If that’s you, the easiest way in is to visit a lounge or retailer already carrying the line.
